Tableland of Nongnaa, Meghalaya

We had heard of a towering tableland, a plateau flanked by canyon, that had been impenetrable and unassailable during the Anglo Khasi wars of the mid 19th century. The village settled here is Nongnah, about 30 kms ahead of Nonlang village and somewhat remote, so cycling here is truly a matter of getting onto backcountry road and riding through densely forested areas and sparse settlements. We didn’t expect the days ride to be difficult but the last five kms were very hard as the grade was well above 10 to 15% in some sections and we had to push our bikes up the mountain. Around us we were flanked by incredible landscapes of tableland mountains, the exotic Indian Pitcher plant and fields of broom plants!
