Climb to the Tableland’ of Nongnaa

The village of Nongnah sits on an elevated plateau, earning it the nickname “tableland.” This unique geographic feature provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The plateau’s flat terrain contrasts with the rugged, rolling hills typical of Meghalaya’s landscape. Nongnah Village is steeped in rich Khasi culture and traditions. The local people here follow the customs of the Khasi tribe. We stayed at the only homestay in the village, a small basic house, with one small room, enough to fit in a bed only and barely any place to walk across, though it had a nice wooden window and lots of sunlight streaming through it. Because Nongnah was so remote and camping near or at a village in Meghalaya where English is barely spoken, we did not want to get into lengthy discussions with the headman to seek permission to camp ( all land is owned by the indigenous tribes and permission to camp should ideally be taken). We spent one full day walking around the village, admiring the massive canyon next to it and then some time cooking a meal in the forest. We found a lot of rare plants that are almost extinct whilst walking around and we came back in the evening after spending time at the highest point overlooking the beautiful tableland village.
