The Rainiest Place on Earth

Day 65 we cycled to the WETTEST PLACE ON EARTH at Mawsynram. Yes, the title is no longer held by Cherrapunji. Mawsynram is the wettest place on Earth, with an average annual rainfall of 11,871 mm. Our journey photographs are a departure from the usual and commonly held visual maps in our mind about Meghalaya – from foggy mountains to lush green mountains. In December the air is cold, it’s bright, sunny and cheerful, Christmas carols are in the air and the landscape has a different hues, dry grass mingled with lush forests. We had spent the night at Emily’s Homestay settled in the lovely village of Mawsynram above the road. But we only got to it after moving from one fully booked homestay to the other. When we did finally find it, we discovered it was a beautiful house and the co-owner Sankrita was charming and very hospitable.
